Year 9

Studying Society

Students will understand the meaning of Sociology and will begin to understand the different sociological perspectives such as Functionalism, Feminism and Marxism through outline studies of key issues such as Crime and Deviance, Social Inequality and The Family,

Students will investigate how Sociological studies are carried out by exploring the various  methods of sampling and research and evaluating the usefulness of different types of data.

Year 10

Students will complete in depth studies of Unit 1 topics 'Education' and 'The Family' and Unit 2 topics 'Crime & Deviance' and 'Media'.

They will analyse statistical data and carry out their own research to examine the impact that these areas have on the socialisation of young people and will compare their findings with research carried out by sociologists over the years.

Students will demonstrate a greater understanding of the different Sociological perspectives and will begin to explore other perspectives such as Liberal-pluralism, conflict perspective and post-modernism to enable them to answer extended answer exam questions.

Year 11

Students will complete in depth studies of Unit 2 topics 'Social Inequality' and 'Power'.

They will start to make links between the different areas of sociological research and will be able to identify patterns and trends across the different topics.  They will develop their understanding of the different Sociological perspectives by exploring various case studies and specific sociological research.

The final part of year 11 is set aside for revision of all 6 units with a specific focus on writing extended answer questions in preparation for the final exam.
