The Health & Social Care curriculum is designed to provide all students with the opportunity to study vocationally alongside their academic qualifications and to introduce them to the Health & Social Care industry and the ‘Community’ centred approach they adopt to day-to-day work. The BTEC Tech Award suite has been designed to allow learners to draw on the knowledge and skills acquired from these subjects where relevant. When studying for a ‘BTEC’, learners can use the knowledge and skills from GCSEs, giving them the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge to everyday and work contexts.

Students will have ‘Opportunities’ to experience real life case studies, external visitors and projects with Health & Social Care organisations to really mirror the day-to-day work of a Health and Social Care professional. Alongside their course students will be enrolled onto national recognised qualifications such as Emergency First Aid at Work, Manual Handling and aspects of the Care Certificate. These qualifications are needed for work with the Health & Social Care Sector and will give students that extra edge when applying for careers or preparing for applications and interviews for Level 3 courses when they move into Key Stage 5.

This course is for learners who want to acquire sector-specific applied knowledge through vocational contexts by studying human lifespan development, health and social care services and values, and health and wellbeing as part of their Key Stage 4 learning. The qualification recognises the value of learning skills, knowledge and vocational attributes such as ‘Courage’ to complement GCSEs. The qualification will broaden learners’ experience and understanding of the varied progression options available to them.

All lessons are tailored for students with individual needs. This involves changing the content, delivery, or methods of learning to ensure every child learns in a way that’s suitable for them.
